Embroidered Portrait (Sept. 24)
A lecture and stitch event!
There is a long tradition of embroidered portraits, from the stumpwork kings and queens of the 1600’s to the embroidered photographs of contemporary artist Maurizio Anzeri. As a medium, embroidery carries with it specific meanings and associations. What is it about the use of embroidery that makes these portraits different from a painted image? This lecture will explore different histories and contexts behind the embroidered portrait. Following the lecture there will be a chance for you to experiment with embroidering on photographs in the style of contemporary artists such as Maurizio Anzeri and Melissa Zexter. Basic embroidery instruction and supplies will be provided but you are encouraged to bring photographs of your own to work on.
